Less is more: the new LIM360 task lamp by Pablo

Here at DESU DESIGN, we believe in being choosy. In late 2012, we decided to expand our collection to include a select number of like-minded designers and manufacturers who share our vision. In the words of William Morris, “have nothing in your houses that you do not know to be useful, or believe to be beautiful.” We believe in products that achieve both. This month we’re featuring the work of Pablo. Embracing a less-is-more ideology, Pablo’s practical lamps are distilled down to their essence, form and light.

Dave’s Take: When the time came to add a lighting partner to our offering, we had a very short list, and topping off that list was Pablo. In a short 20 year span, Pablo Pardo has created a company that has redefined lighting. Their designs embody technical sophistication but always in a manner that is perfectly married to visual elegance. When you engage one of their task lamps for the first time, you will be utterly amazed at the level of versatility it offers, while still being visually minimalistic. Why we love Larch Wood

Greetings from DESU DESIGN. As you may have noticed, our website has recently undergone a facelift. In addition to larger images, menu thumbnails, and a streamlined checkout process, we have expanded! We are now carrying a few select pieces from other designers and manufacturers whose work we admire. These are companies whose passion for quality and beauty matches our own. We hope you love these new items as much as we do. This week, we’d like to introduce Larch Wood’s end grain cutting boards. During the winter holidays, family and friends gather together over food and conversation to create memories. These beautiful, durable boards are perfect for preparing and showing off dishes this holiday season: they can handle the heavy work of cutting, chopping, and prepping, and they’ll look good doing it. Dave’s Take: I have to admit, I envy the Europeans. Not just because of their free health care, or their ability to serve up a great tasting cup of coffee just about anywhere, but because they have such easy access to one of my favorite species of wood, Siberian Larch. It was in the midst of scouring the internet one day searching for a domestic importer of this glorious wood that I stumbled across Larch Wood Enterprises. Once I saw the work of this dedicated group of craftsmen, I knew we’d found our cutting board partner. These pieces were not just good, they were really, really good. You could tell each board was studied, crafted… made by hands that gave a damn. Their larch is sourced locally from Nova Scotia. It’s a species of wood that is dense, stable and just the right amount of hard for an end grain cutting board. Each piece is sanded smooth, oiled with food safe mineral oil, and sealed with beeswax. The resulting pieces are not only perfectly suited to their function, but also resonate a kind of beauty typically reserved for fine, studio-crafted furniture. David E. Scott Founder of DESU DESIGN

Season’s Greetings from Vermont

Greetings from DESU DESIGN. Here’s wishing you a bit of good cheer this Holiday season. 2011 shaped up to be quite a busy and exciting year here at DESU. Our biggest change was the relocation of our production facility to the lovely state of Vermont. Our new workshop is nestled into the woods, high up in the Green Mountains. In spite of the nasty visit from hurricane Irene, things have progressed smoothly and we are up and running. This move will enable us to expand our production and be in closer dialogue with nature, one of primary sources of inspiration. Our business office will continue to be based in Brooklyn, giving us the best of both worlds, as late night sushi runs are a tricky task in Vermont.

Many of you have been asking about when we will be launching new products. Soon! New and very exciting pieces are in the works. (hint, lots of wood here in Vermont) We’ll also be launching a new web site in the coming months, and there will be some significant changes coming along with it. In the meantime, feel free to let us know what is on your mind. We love having input from our customers, friends, and colleagues. The best new products are the ones that fill that untapped need. Tell us what you wish would improve in the world, and we will see if we can make it better.
